Literature for Travel Days!

8 Books To Read On The Plane!

We spend a lot of time on planes, buses, and trains, so we had to find a good way to pass the time! One of my favorite things about travel days, is the chance to catch up on some reading. A good book can make the hours fly by, and I offten arive at the destination before I am ready to stop reading.

Audio books are one of my favorite ways to read, because I can listen while driving, or doing the dishes. I get motion sick if I try to read a printed novel while we are on the bus, but with an audio book I can stare out the window and soak in the views while I day dream. The voice actors who read the books also add a lot to the story! It really makes travel days so much more fun!

With all the hours of travel we have under our belts, we have had the chance to read a lot of books. Here are some of our tried and true favorites to help you pass the time on your next big journey! We have included some afiliate links to our favorite books in the article! If you purchase through these links we get a small commission, but don’t worry, it won’t cost you anything extra! A fun, and funny new series that is nearly as good as Narnia! These books are written for Children, but they are fun to read as an adult too! There are strong Christian themes throughout, and they deal with complex subjects such as family, identity, suffering, death, and the need to belong. The author uses comic relief to explain plot points and relieve tension when dealing with some of the heavier subject matter. Perfect for any fantasy lover! Some content may be too scary for very young children. The Wingfeather series consists of four books which have also been made into an animated series on Angel Studios.

By Richard Adams

This book goes down like a warm bowl of soup on a cold day. Narrated by Peter Capaldi the audio version is a treat to listen to. It is apropriate for children as well as adults, and is engaging without being very scary. The story follows a family of rabbits who are driven from their home, and must find their way through a winding epic adventure. The plot meanders through unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. If you are tired of cliche fantasy books that all have the same plot, Watership Down is the book for you! It deals with themes of courage, loyalty, and the search for a home. The audio book lasts over 17 hours, and I was genuinely sad when this modern classic ended.

By Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson

Narrated by Jim Dale, any Harry Potter fans will love this new twist on a classic story! An imaginitive adventure that fleshes out the humble beginnings of a classic hero. Peter and The Star Catchers is perfect for children and adults alike! Follow along with Peter and Molly as they battle pirates, and take to the high seas in pursuit of a fantastic secret! The first in a series of five books, Peter and the Star Catchers features suprisingly well developed characters. With classic themes of good and evil this is a story that goes down with ease.

My newest love, Strange The Dreamer is fantasy like I have never experienced. The plot is Romantic, imaginitive, and unpredictable. Characters are complex and multi dimensional. The writing is like a song, and weaves together realism and fantasy “Like crumbs on a wizard’s beard”. This novel deals with mature themes and is suitable for a young adult audiance, not children. Lasting 18 hours, the audio book offers plenty of entertainment for long journeys, and is the first of a pair. Muse of Nightmares is the second half of this glorious tale, and Lani Taylor ties every thread back together in the most satisfying way! A happy ending, but she doesn’t take the easy way out!

By Ken Follet

Ken Follet’s writing is a rich tapestry of complex characters and epic historical fiction! I have never been invested in a book so fast, but brace yourself! These books are not for the faint of heart, and Certainly NOT for children! There is more than a fair share of suffering in this story, and Ken Follet does not spare you a single painful blow. Masterful writing, gripping action sequences, and complex character development abound, but those who are easily triggered should skip The Pillars of The Earth.

By Larry McMurtry

Another glorious work of historical fiction, Lonesome Dove is a compelling and beautifully imagined novel. Based in the American west, the story is quite sad, and gory at times. With a slow start, this classic novel took me a while to get invested. The characters face many hardships, and some do not make it through alive. By the end Larry McMurtry had earned my respect for a masterful work of art, but I can’t say it is a feel good tale.

By Charlotte Bronte

No one writes hopeless romance like Charlotte Bronte! I am a particular fan of the audio book narrated by Thandiwe Newton, who brings great passion and feeling to the story! Something of mystery, and something of romance, this classic feminist novel depicts a womans struggle to control her future. An intimate portrayal of the female heart, Jane Eyre brings a complex, and gothic mystique suitable to a subtle and mature audiance.

By Jane Austen

A light hearted classic comedy, Emma depicts a complex social structure, and all of the delicate intricacies of female emotion! This story is good for a laugh, as the heroine is both brilliant, and highly fallible! A compulsive match maker, Emma is foolishly unaware of her own heart, and lands herself in quite a pickle! If you are looking for a fun easy read, this classic will keep you happily entertained for hours!
